Digital rights management (DRM) and trusted computing pioneer, Intertrust, a company majorly owned by Philips and Sony with each having a stake of 49.5% filed a patent infringement case against Apple yesterday claiming that most of Apple’s device violate their patents. Intertrust currently licences its patents to most of the tech giants like Adobe, Samsung, Nokia, Motorola, HTC, LG, Vodafone, Sony, and Philips. It won a patent infringement case againt Microsoft in 2014 for a broad range of infringements and settled the case for a huge sum of $440 million.
Apple seems to have violated 15 patents with its iPads, iPhones, Apple TV and iPod and Mac range of products, if claims by Intertrust are true Apple might have to shell out amounts in Billions to Intertrust to license their patents for their line up of devices. Intertrust CEO Talal Shamoon said in a written statement that “Our patents are foundational to modern Internet security and trusted computing, and result from years of internal research and development. We are proud of our record of peaceful and constructive licensing with industry leaders. We find it regrettable that we are forced to seek Court assistance to resolve this matter.”.
